Mussel
2023
50 x 70 cm
oil on linen canvas
Mussel is a phantom haunting drained marshes, the oxbows of regulated rivers; her specter hovers over the lifeless waters of the Oder and the dried-up backwaters during droughts. Squeezed through narrow, regulated channels, poisoned by murky, contaminated waters. They are ghosts that haunt to tell of what has befallen them, silently demanding justice, attention, healing for past wrongs. I speculate about repairing the damage inflicted on mussel, about restoring the life of free, sweet, river waters. I dream of a triumphant mussel, punishing her wrongdoers, but above all, free from trauma and a dark past. I envision a mussel that is beautiful and smiles, no longer needing to haunt us.
