Wild lands

2020
140 x 150 cm

The painting was inspired by the film 'Suspiria' directed by Dario Argento (1977). In this expressionistic horror, the protagonist finds herself in a house under the influence of witches and dark forces. The hyperaestheticism of the set design and psychedelic colors determine the mental states of the characters and foreshadow future events. The emerald reminds of the presence of magic, but it is the red that heralds the arrival of evil forces in full force. A significant motif in the film is the doors through which the protagonist passes – they act as portals between the rational world and the world of occultism and spells.

Beyond the emerald portal unfolds the world of oddities, the titular Wild Lands. The space pulsates with red, simultaneously fascinating and heralding danger. Disturbing, organic shapes of extravagant mushroom-phalluses and a burning horizon evoke fear and disgust but also fascination with the extraordinary, the mysterious, and the potentially dangerous. In this strange scenery, I see myself as a fairy-tale heroine – if I want to break free from the enchanted chill of the emerald, the only way leads through the Wild Lands, where I must confront the psychedelic world of lurking dangers and capricious powers.
